Greetings fellow creatives,
If anyone has any interest in a programming language that can incorporate 3D / can offer quick access to high interactivity that traditionally would take months of coding in C++ and that offers quick and compelling visual feedback do check out Processing. It also has some useful applications for dynamic special effects and can be used on Android phones (not iphones though...but who cares about Apple or iphones.)
To elaborate on my previous disdain of Apple and iphones - who cares about Apple when you can have ALIENWARE:
I'm about to go ahead and pick up an alienware m11x as my new portable rig but it might actually replace my desktop too as, although it is a notebook, it is much more powerful than my PC and it has a VGA output connection so all I need to do is simply connect my monitor and perhaps my keyboard and it's a new PC. This will finally enable me to carry out the work on a film that has remained unfinished with Pillory Barn for the Caldecott Foundation because between us we didn't have the rendering power to render mental ray + Vue Xstream etc. Well it was taking 50 minutes a frame any way.
Anyhow I have recently been given dispensation by my tutor (seen here after performing a gig with Asimo the robot; asimo gig ) to use processing this semester (it's a bit outside the specifics of the syllabus for this semester but it's just another tool to tackle creative problems so they don't really care + it's a better tool to study if you want to be a better coder which will help with dynamic web / java / PHP / Mysql next semester etc. It's enlightened, the course can calibrate sensibly to what I want to do!) So I will be working on a kind of Sim City that uses boids as a starting point to simulate traffic and a subject within that flow of traffic (with rules etc) so you follow this subject from a distant, statistical map like viewpoint but can zoom in to 'street level' and follow the unpredictable behaviours of the subject as it reacts to the environment like a scalextric set etc there are many routes and it's unpredictable which route (event) will occur as the 'subject' is autonomous. So it's part installation, part AI experiment, part simulation etc.
Also I think architecture is where it's at for design theory.
